Expanded Mission Neighborhood Health Center

The new permanent Excelsior home for the Mission Neighborhood Health Center will offer greatly enhanced medical services to Excelsior residents. Double the number of community members will be served as the clinic will double the number of exam rooms and add dental services, for adults and children, for the first time. Services available at the clinic will include prenatal, pediatric, youth, women’s health, adult medicine, and dental services. There will also be new space for wellness activities and health education for the surrounding community.

By the numbers:

  • 10,000 square feet – more than double the existing 4,100 square feet of the clinic.
  • 5,000 residents served each year – double the 2,500 currently served.
  • 14 exam rooms – double the current 7 exam rooms.
  • 6 new dental chairs – serving adults and children.
  • celebrating 50 years of providing neighborhood health services in 2018.

We are committed to working with the community to find the right balance of parking for the full-service grocery store, new commercial spaces and new homes. The Excelsior has good transportation access with the 14, 43, 8, and 54 Bus Lines, the nearby Balboa Park BART station and dedicated lanes for bicycles. The Excelsior is also home to a number of families and commercial uses that rely on some degree of auto access. We propose to improve the walkability and livability of the area by removing the existing surface parking lots and moving the necessary parking to an underground garage that will be available for grocery and retail customers and residents. We are also providing one bicycle parking space for every new home.

By the numbers:

  • 345 underground parking spaces
  • 23 Motorcycle spaces
  • 440 Bicycle parking spaces

Vibrant Public Plazas

Two new, large public plazas will create well-lit, green open spaces for the entire Excelsior community to enjoy. A mid-block plaza will provide a new pedestrian connection between Mission St., Alemany Blvd. and Bertita St., featuring a cafe with outdoor seating and play facilities for children and families. Active ground floor uses will line the plaza and help support a safe, vibrant plaza. Although open to the public, the plaza will be maintained day and night by the adjacent residential building. Ground level ambient lighting will surround the project and the adjacent sidewalks.

Retail and Community Space

In addition to the new and expanded full-service grocery store and Mission Neighborhood Health Center, this project will include 10,000 square feet of ground floor retail and community serving space along Mission Street that can be divided into multiple smaller spaces. We want to hear from you about what you’d like to see more of in the neighborhood. We’ve heard that some are interested in locally-owned restaurants and coffee shops, co-working spaces, or an ice cream shop. We hope to work with you to identify the shops and services that will best serve your neighborhood.
